The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Church's life. Jesus said in the Gospel of John (JN 6:51 ff): "I am the living bread that came down from heaven". He promises that those who eat his flesh and drink his blood share in the life Jesus offers. We believe that in the sacrifice of the Mass, Jesus offers us his Body and Blood. We believe that this presence of Jesus Christ, the Risen One, is as real as if we had a seat at the Last Supper! The Mass, the Liturgy of the Eucharist, always includes the proclamation of God's Word, thanksgiving to God for all the benefits God bestows, especially the gift of God's Son, the consecration of bread and wine, and participation in the liturgical banquet by receiving the Lord's Body and Blood. These elements constitute one single act of worship. (from the Catechism of the Catholic Church #1408) We also call the sacrament of the Eucharist "Communion", as it nourishes and supports us as members of the Body of Christ, in the "community" of the Church, the people of God. We receive communion so we can become more and more like Jesus Christ.
First Communion (Eucharist) Eucharist is received for the first time after First Reconciliation has been celebrated. This usually occurs in the second grade or any time thereafter. If you, your child, or someone you know would like to receive First Eucharist, please call the Pastoral Center.
